Overview

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Vancouver’s Collingwood neighborhood, Milk and Sugar BBQ Bar offers an inviting taste of authentic Cantonese BBQ with a modern twist. Located at 5103 Joyce St, this casual spot combines the charm of a Hong Kong-style café with the bold flavors of traditional barbecue, making it a go-to destination for locals seeking comfort food with an edge.

The restaurant's menu showcases an impressive variety of barbecue meats such as tender BBQ pork, succulent soy sauce chicken, crispy roasted pork, and perfectly roasted BBQ duck. Their BBQ platters are flexible, allowing diners to mix and match meats to create personalized combinations. The meat consistently displays a satisfying balance of juiciness and crispness—roast pork skin crackles, and the pork belly’s charred edges deliver a hint of smokiness that food enthusiasts appreciate. Patrons often praise the freshness and quality, highlighting dishes like the roast duck platter and the soy chicken as standout choices.

Beyond the BBQ, Milk and Sugar BBQ Bar surprises with crowd-pleasers like their all-day deluxe breakfast and comforting noodle soups that pair perfectly with any meat selection. The café’s unique appeal extends to its specialty drinks, such as the Taro Milk Tea Slush with pearls—a refreshing accompaniment that reflects the café’s Hong Kong inspiration. This blend of food and drink creates an accessible and well-rounded dining experience that appeals to both families and casual friends meetups. While it retains a casual, laid-back ambiance, the space is ample and welcoming, easily accommodating small groups and those looking for a quick, satisfying meal.

One of the venue’s engaging features is its variety of add-on sauces and dips, which elevate each dish. From a smooth house BBQ soy sauce and gingery green onion oil to spicy chipotle and tabasco, these options provide layers of flavor customization to suit different palates. This thoughtful detail enhances the overall dining experience, giving guests control over how their meals hit the spot.

Milk and Sugar BBQ Bar caters to those seeking authentic Cantonese barbecue without the formality of fine dining. Its approachable, neighborhood-oriented vibe resonates with locals and visitors alike, especially those who appreciate hearty, well-executed comfort food paired with traditional bubble tea. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch, ordering through delivery apps, or gathering with friends over drinks at their bar, this spot strikes a satisfying balance between authenticity, quality, and convenience.

In summary, Milk and Sugar BBQ Bar triumphs as a cornerstone for Cantonese BBQ in Vancouver. It delivers consistent flavor, generous portions, and a welcoming atmosphere. $9 char siu (bbq pork) rice (small size) deal. For the price it’s worth it. Not the tastiest bbq pork (tough and bland), but it’s a good deal! The place is clearly a go to for locals. I saw bubble tea for $5 too

I ordered through Uber Eats and got the Any 2 BBQ Items Combination BBQ Pork & Roasted Pork with a Small Iced Lemon Black Tea. The addition of the steamed broccoli and the fried egg were a nice surprise with my meal. The BBQ Pork had some end pieces which I always enjoy as they tend to be a bit more charred. The charred bits have some nice crunch that I really enjoyed. The Roasted Pork had crispy skin and super juicy meat with some nice fatty parts as well. The combo had perfect amount of food for the the price the egg had a semi runny yolk. I was very happy with the meal the iced lemon black tea was very refreshing with the meal on a hot day. I have walked by the restaurant many times, next time I will go in and have what I am sure will be a great meal.

Update: The Missus and I have eaten at or take away a number of times from Milk and Sugar BBQ Bar since the first review. The BBQ meats (Char Siu, Roast Duck, Roast Pork and Soya Chicken) are always tasty with steamed rice. It's at the top for Cantonese BBQ meats in the Metro Vancouver area. Highly recommend the food. ******************************************************* We were biking thru Collingwood and stopped here for lunch. Had the roast pork and chicken with rice and the Missus had bbq pork with rice. Food was decent and lots of seating. Price was reasonable for food in the area.

This place is such a convenient and affordable Hong Kong style cafe! Randomly decided to walk in and see how the bubble tea was and was superseded at how great the prices were! I just got a regular Taro slush with pearls bubble tea this time around but I want to come back to see how the food is. They also have a bar which is fun. This is definitely more of a casual spot for friends than a first date location though.
